What is Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is a male condition in which the breast tissues enlarge. The breasts then vary in size and appear much larger and more feminine than usual. It can occur for many reasons, but is often due to an imbalance between testosterone and estrogen hormones. The condition affects at least 40% of men at some point during their lives and about 70% of boys during mid-puberty. Brandon Plastic Surgery is located just 35 minutes from Wesley Chapel, Florida.
Gynecomastia surgery reduces excess breast tissue and builds up the chest region to look more masculine.
When Do I Go for Gynecomastia Surgery in Wesley Chapel?
Some healthy routines that you may implement to get rid of enlarged breast tissue include exercising, reducing alcohol intake, and losing weight. It may naturally resolve within two years. However, you don’t have to wait for it to subside when you can seek medical guidance. Thus, opt for surgery when:
- You encounter extreme discomforts like rubbing your skin and chafing.
- You have low self-esteem because of the condition.
- Other methods of reducing gynecomastia have proved unfruitful for you.
You should note that male breast enlargement can be a sign of other diseases, hence, if you have severe pain, swelling, or discharge from the nipple, see a doctor right away.
Getting Gynecomastia Surgery
Gynecomastia surgery is an outpatient procedure. Before the treatment, let Dr. Shienbaum know about your expected results. You may be told to avoid any medication that may cause excessive bleeding. Dr. Shienbaum will also take your medical history during a consultation to help determine the specific surgery method and treatment plan that’s right for you.
Dr. Shienbaum will conduct a physical examination that may include taking pictures and getting measurements of your chest. He will then decide to either perform liposuction or a surgical excision technique, depending on your body type and extent of gynecomastia. He will also detail the side effects of the surgery.
Gynecomastia Surgery Recovery Tips
During the first three days after the surgery, you may experience minimal pain and discomfort. Dr. Shienbaum will give you medication to ease this discomfort during recovery. Get a lot of rest, as you might feel fatigued. Dr. Shienbaum advises gynecomastia patients to stick to a well-balanced diet to ensure the body has all the nutrients and energy it needs to heal. You will need to avoid strenuous exercise for a week or several weeks. In order to take care of the incisions after the surgery, you will wear compression dressing for two weeks.
It will take about four to six weeks for a full recovery. If you experience any sudden changes such as severe pain, trouble breathing, or swelling that won’t go away, call us right away.
