What is a Breast Lift?

A breast lift with implants is more or less how it sounds—a combination of a breast lift and breast augmentation. Breast lifts are known medically as mastopexy.

A breast lift with implants is recommended for patients who face sagging or droopy breasts as well as a loss of volume or a natural breast size that they are unhappy with. This can often occur as a result of the natural aging process, pregnancy, and breastfeeding, or weight fluctuation. Dr. Shienbaum offers mastopexy with implants to patients in the Tampa, Brandon, Riverview, and Lakeland, Florida area.

In Tampa, Florida, cosmetic surgery includes many different types of breast lifts:

The Breast Lift with Implants Procedure

During a breast lift with implants, Dr. Shienbaum will make an incision around the areolae, along the breast crease (crescent lift), vertically from the areolae to the breast crease (lollipop lift), or a combination of these (anchor lift) depending on your anatomy and goals for the procedure. Through these incisions, the breast tissue is reshaped and excess loose skin is removed to achieve the desired shape and position. Breast implants are also placed either above or below the chest muscle.

Dr. Shienbaum’s Brandon Plastic Surgery office is 35 minutes from Wesley Chapel, 15 minutes from Riverview and 48 minutes from Bradenton.

Your Breast Implant Options

Patients can choose between three types of breast implants: saline, silicone, or “gummy bear.” Each of these implant types consists of an outer silicone shell filled with the corresponding material. In addition, patients can choose between various shapes, ranging from teardrop-shaped implants, which tend to appear more natural, or round implants, which tend to create more volume. Finally, Dr. Shienbaum will help you choose the correct implant size for you. This can be achieved by essentially “trying on” various implant sizes during your consultation and determining which achieves your goal results and appears proportionate for your body. For patients with noticeably asymmetrical breasts, implants of two different sizes can be used to create a more even appearance.

Breast Lift with Fat Injection

Instead of breast implants, some patients choose to pair their mastopexy with fat injection. Also known as fat transfer or a natural breast augmentation, this procedure involves collecting fat from another area of the body using liposuction before injecting it into the breasts. This results in a relatively small increase in size and a more natural look and feels compared to breast implants. In addition, fat transfer breast augmentation allows patients to remove unwanted fat from areas such as the abdomen, back, hips, thighs, or upper arms. Some patients may not be good candidates for fat injection if they are too lean to complete the procedure or their goal size is larger than can be achieved with fat transfer alone.

Mesh Breast Lift (GalaFLEX)

A mesh breast lift utilizes a surgical mesh internal bra to address breast sag or droopy breasts. During this procedure, Dr. Shienbaum places synthetic mesh in the breasts, which offers temporary support to the tissues. As you heal from the surgery, new tissue forms around the mesh, which later dissolves. As a result, the breasts are left supported in the new position by the new, natural tissue. This technique is also referred to as a GalaFLEX lift, a brand name for the surgical mesh used to complete the procedure.

Breast Lift with Implants Recovery

Recovery after a breast lift with implants is similar overall to recovery after a breast lift or breast augmentation alone. You can return home the same day as the procedure with a trusted friend or family member to care for you. Some soreness and swelling are normal after the surgery. Most patients spend a week to two weeks resting at home before returning to work or other regular routines. Dr. Shienbaum will give you specific instructions regarding your recovery process and monitor your healing during follow-up appointments.

When to Choose a Breast Lift with Implants

Brandon and Tampa, FL candidates for a breast lift with implants have both sagging or drooping and wish to increase the size or volume of their breasts. Some signs that you may be a good candidate for a mastopexy include nipples that point downward and fall below the breast crease, enlarged areolae, and skin laxity. In some cases, a breast lift alone can restore the appearance of youthful breasts and even make the breasts appear larger.

However, many breast lift candidates also have a “deflated” look due to volume loss, or have breasts that are small, disproportionate, or asymmetrical. In this case, implants can be placed during a mastopexy procedure to achieve the results they are looking for. Combining a mastopexy and breast augmentation in this way is very common.

Determining which type of breast procedure is right for you can be difficult on your own. During a consultation in our Brandon, FL office, Dr. Shienbaum will work to understand your goals for your breast procedure and recommend whether a breast augmentation, breast lift, or breast lift with implants is the best choice for you.

Breast Lift with Implants Results

The goal of a breast lift with implants is to create a more youthful appearance with fuller breasts that suit the patient’s proportions. Final results are usually noticeable within a few months after surgery as swelling subsides.

Scars After a Breast Lift with Implants

A breast lift with implants results in some scarring, which varies depending on the incision pattern required to complete the procedure. Scarring can be minimized by closely following Dr. Shienbaum’s instructions during the recovery period, and is disguised within the natural contours of the body as much as possible. Dr. Shienbaum will explain the scars that you can expect during your consultation.  To find Brandon Plastic Surgery, our office is 18 minutes from Tampa, 51 Minutes from Lakeland and one hour from Winter Haven.

How Long Does a Breast Lift with Implants Last?

A breast lift with implants will give you long-lasting results, but over time the breasts will begin to change as a result of the aging process. Typically, breast lifts with implants lead to results that last for 10-15 years or longer.
