What is PRP Therapy?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is an all-natural skin rejuvenation treatment. For years, athletes and reconstructive surgeons have been using PRP therapy to help the body heal from injuries. Now, PRP therapy can also be used to help restore a healthy and radiant complexion. PRP therapy works as a minimally-invasive injectable treatment, and nearly anyone is a candidate.

Who is a Candidate?

Both men and women who are looking for a natural alternative to facial rejuvenation can benefit from this treatment. Candidates are often looking to treat volume loss in the face, fine lines and wrinkles, uneven skin texture, and scarring. Because PRP injections come from the patient’s own body, there is no risk of allergic or adverse reactions as there may be with other injectables. However, the treatment is not suitable for those who take blood thinners or suffer from certain chronic medical conditions. A consultation with Dr. Shienbaum can help to determine if this treatment is right for you.

How is Treatment Done?

During treatment, your blood will be taken just as if you were getting your blood drawn at the doctor’s office. Then, your blood will be placed in a centrifuge, which will separate the blood plasma from the platelets. This creates PRP, or “platelet-rich plasma.” The PRP will then be reinjected into a specific area of the face to stimulate collagen and tissue growth for a healthier complexion.

In cases of more severe, deeper wrinkles, Dr. Shienbaum may recommend that you combine PRP treatment with another injectable, such as hyaluronic acid or Botox, to achieve the best results.

PRP treatment may also be combined with microneedling. In this procedure, the platelet-rich plasma is applied to the skin after microneedling service is complete. The micro-injuries allow the platelet-rich plasma to more deeply saturate the skin.

Results

Following PRP therapy, patients may experience mild skin redness. Most individuals will see full results 2-4 days after treatment. There is little downtime required, with many people returning to everyday activities within 24 hours.

PRP treatment results in increased collagen production, so the results of the treatment are fairly long lasting. The skin will be firmer and more elastic than before the treatment.
