What is Liposuction?
Liposuction is a procedure done to sculpt the body and eliminate stubborn pockets of fat. It can be used on almost any area of the body, including the buttocks, love handles, hips, thighs, calves, breasts, back, arms, and more. Liposuction is often combined with other procedures to create optimal results.
Who is a candidate for Liposuction?
Individuals who have localized areas of stubborn fat that are resistant to diet and exercise can often benefit from Liposuction. Candidates should have good skin elasticity, as liposuction cannot tighten skin, as well as be healthy, non-smokers. The best way to determine if this treatment option is right for you is through a consultation with Dr. Shienbaum.
What is Injection Lipolysis?
It is a chemical called deoxycholic acid which, when injected, destroys fat cells. Marketed as Kybella, it recently gained FDA approval for treatment of the fat beneath the chin.
After the local anesthesia has been injected, a precise amount of medication is injected using a grid pattern that has been pre-marked on the skin beneath the chin. The medication is injected as a single treatment.
The risks of injection include bruising, erythema, swelling, pain, and induration. Nerve damage and injury can cause a crooked smile and difficulty swallowing. Results can take 8 -12 weeks and multiple injections may be required.
What risk factors can prevent me from having Liposuction?
People with certain medical conditions, including diabetes, heart disease, lung compromise, and poor blood circulation are at increased risk for complications from liposuction. People with significant illnesses should ask their treating physician if they are able to undergo surgery. It is important that you be properly evaluated during your consultation and that Dr. Shienbaum is fully aware of your medical history in order to make a determination.
Can the excess fat be removed from the pubic area?
Liposuction can remove excess fat from the pubic mound or Mons Pubis. A bulge in this area is quite common and can be particularly annoying. This region can be quite successfully treated with liposuction.
Do I need Liposuction or a Tummy Tuck?
While Liposuction can enhance your appearance and help boost self-confidence by removing stubborn abdominal fat, it will not alter excessively sagging skin or protruding internal body fat, nor will it tighten a weakened and distended abdominal wall. You should carefully consider what you want to achieve. During your consultation, Dr. Shienbaum will help identify your expectations and suggest solutions.
What is Radiofrequency Lipolysis?
This is a procedure for the reduction of fatty deposits beneath the skin using radiofrequency energy. Some treatment modalities will also tighten loose skin. Vanquish and Thermi are two popular versions of radiofrequency devices.
Will my Liposuction results be ruined by weight gain?
Your improvement from Liposuction will not be reversed by weight gain. The treated fat cells were permanently removed and will not return. A significant weight gain will, however, deposit excess fat in other areas of the body. Liposuction will not improve your appearance if you continue to put on weight. However, it will often serve as a jumpstart to a healthier diet and lifestyle.
What is Dr. Shienbaum’s preferred Liposculpting technique?
Vaser Liposculpture is the preferred method through which Dr. Shienbaum sculpts his patients. It has enhanced and transformed the results of Liposuction. With the Vaser, he is able to contour and etch heightened muscular definition– all with reduced swelling, bruising, or downtime. No longer is Liposuction only about simply removing fat.
Is Vaser Liposuction best?
Vaser Liposuction uses low-frequency, ultrasonic energy to liquefy fat cells and tighten the overlying skin. The small ultrasonic probes are very efficient at emulsifying the tightly-adherent, stubborn, fibrous fat found in the male breast and the flank and back areas. In addition, the ultrasonic energy promotes retraction of loose and inelastic skin. Dr. Shienbaum has achieved his most dramatic liposuction results using Vaser Liposculpting.
How much does Liposuction cost?
Most surgeons will charge a set fee per specific area. The larger the area, the more expensive the procedure. One can usually find “bargain basement” fees advertised in your local paper. Often, you get what you pay for.
Is Liposuction painful?
Fat itself is seldom a source of pain. But the nerves, blood vessels, and muscles surrounding fat are traumatized during Liposuction, resulting in pain. Excessive swelling and edema can add painful tissue pressure. The discomfort will usually disappear in several weeks, but the swelling may take months to totally resolve. A comfortable garment, regular massage, and a return to activity go a long way toward achieving recovery.
How to find the Best Liposuction surgeon?
Be certain to check out your surgeon’s credentials. Board certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery should be your starting point. Has your surgeon been credentialed to perform Liposuction at the hospital? Look carefully at the photographic documentation. Speak to former patients and remember– training and experience count.
Is CoolSculpting better than Liposuction?
While CoolSculpting can randomly destroy fat cells, it cannot sculpt and contour the body like an artistic and experienced plastic surgeon.
What are my alternatives to Liposuction?
Diet, exercise, and lifestyle change are always your first and best options. There are many forms of non-invasive treatments which use ultrasonic, radio frequency, thermal, chilling, or mechanical energy to “destroy” fat cells. In addition, chemical injections, osmotic wraps, and vacuuming massage have been promoted.
Are Home Lipo Ultrasonic Cavitation Machines effective?
Home units must be safe, and therefore low-powered. They are therefore ineffective and will probably yield minimal results. High-powered units capable of destroying fat must be cleared by the FDA and are available only to physicians.
Artistic body contouring with Liposculpture
Dr. Shienbaum has found that none of these techniques allow the delicate body-sculpting and artistic contouring achieved through Liposculpture. A beautiful hourglass silhouette with fat enhancement is simply not possible with any of these so-called noninvasive techniques.
Do I need a lifestyle change after Liposuction?
Liposuction can be a highly-motivational incentive for a new dietary resolve and lifestyle change. Most liposuction patients achieve their ultimate weight goal through strong determination and willpower. Successful patients will tell you that the surgery was only the beginning– the rest is up to you!
Are there risks associated with Liposuction etching?
Liposuction etching is a technique to mimic sculpted musculature by carefully placing lines of fat indentations under the skin. However, on close inspection, this “new” musculature can feel somewhat soft and unnatural, with distinct irregularities, and can undergo changes with weight fluctuations.
Why do I need compression garments after Liposuction?
Liposuction and removal of fat will leave an empty space between the skin and muscle. This space will swell and bruise unless compressed. A good compression garment will reduce the swelling and fluid collecting inside this space, reduce bruising, splint muscles, and give postural support.
What is Laser Lipolysis?
This is a form of lipolysis in which laser energy is used to destroy fat.
It is most suitable for specific areas of localized body fat and can be performed without anesthesia. A popular form of laser lipolysis is SculpSure. During treatment, patients may experience an intermittent warming and tingling sensation, and the results take up to 3 months.
When will I see my Liposuction results?
You will be fitted with an elastic compression garment that will encompass the portions of your body that were treated. This ensures proper healing and should be worn for several weeks following the procedure. The new body contour should emerge in the first 2 weeks as swelling subsides.
Will my skin be loose after Liposuction?
It depends on the quality of your skin, a feature which is often difficult to judge. Skin thickness, elasticity, looseness, and the amount of excess all determine the ability of the skin to contract and assume the contour of the underlying tissues.
Thin, aging skin will usually have lost much of its resiliency. Likewise, stretch marks designate dermal breakdown with poor skin recoil and elasticity. The bottom line is that excess, lax skin will usually require a skin removal and tightening procedure.
Can Liposuction tighten loose skin?
Both Vaser Ultrasonic- and Radiofrequency-assisted Liposuction have been shown to provide documented skin tightening. This is due to the heat generated by these energy-based forms of Liposuction.
Can Liposuctioned fat be used for body enhancement?
Fat transfer has succsessfully been used for reuvination of facial atropy seen with aging, depressed scars, sagging buttocks, and deflated breasts.
It is the most natural of body fillers that contains stem cells, and once established is permanent.
