Extra tissue around your eyes can make you look more tired, sad, and older than you feel. A blepharoplasty can improve the appearance of your eyes to remove extra loose skin and make your eyes more open and alert. Like any procedure, eyelid surgery requires a little preparation. Knowing how to prepare and what to expect along the way can help you have a more successful, smooth procedure process.
Your Expectations
Understanding what eyelid surgery can and can’t treat can help you adjust your expectations for results. Before even scheduling your consultation, you should take some time to understand your unique concerns and what you expect from the outcome of your procedure. An eyelid procedure can improve drooping upper lids that may or may not interfere with vision, puffiness around the eyes, and bags under the eyes. An eyelid surgery cannot fix sagging eyebrows, dark circles under the eyes, or wrinkles such as crows feet in the corners of the eyes. If you have any of these concerns, you might talk to your surgeon about other procedure options.
Examinations
To undergo plastic surgery, you must be in good health. Before your eyelid procedure, you should ensure that you do not have any conditions that might interfere with a successful recovery. You will also have a physical exam during your consultation so your surgeon can determine the extent of your extra skin and develop your treatment plan. If you believe your excess skin is causing a functional issue and interfering with your vision, a vision test might also be conducted.
Things to Quit
When it gets closer to your eyelid procedure day, you will be asked not to take anything that can thin the blood including aspirin, ibuprofen, and certain herbal supplements. Blood thinners can lead to excess bleeding and bruising with your procedure. Your surgeon will provide you with a complete list of what you should avoid and how long before surgery you should stop taking them. You will also be asked to quit smoking several weeks before your procedure. Smoking can impair your ability to heal, making for a more difficult recovery.
