Awake Liposuction in Tampa

Liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure used to eliminate stubborn fat and enhance the body’s contours. While liposuction can be performed under general anesthesia, local anesthesia offers the benefit of a quicker recovery because patients are kept awake during the procedure. You will be able to talk to your surgeon and we will help keep you comfortable during the liposuction surgery.

Common Liposuction Treatment Areas

Liposuction can target stubborn fat that is resistant to diet and exercise on many areas of the body. Various areas can be treated in one procedure, including fat in the:

  • Abdomen
  • Hips (love handles)
  • Buttocks
  • Inner and outer thighs
  • Back and bra fat
  • Upper arms
  • Neck and double chin
  • Chest (male breast reduction)

Benefits of Awake Liposuction

Many patients are understandably concerned about the risks of general anesthesia and being put to sleep. By using local anesthesia and keeping patients awake, these risks are minimized. Additionally, you will be able to speak and move freely so your surgeon may ask that you flex certain muscles or reposition a few ways to access the entire treatment area. This allows for a smooth, even contour with no area left untreated.

The cost of awake liposuction is another benefit. A substantial part of the cost of a traditional liposuction procedure is to cover the surgical suite and anesthesiologist. Awake liposuction can be performed in our office under the expert supervision of Dr. Shienbaum and Dr. Gargya.

Who is a Good Candidate for Awake Liposuction?

The best candidates for awake liposuction are healthy individuals who have localized areas of excess fat. Patients with a slightly higher BMI (above 30) can benefit from awake liposuction since there are higher risks of general anesthesia with overweight individuals. Those who have undergone anesthesia before and tolerated it well are also great candidates for the awake liposuction procedure. At your consultation, we will discuss your surgical goals and assess your medical history to make sure this is a safe treatment option for you.

Awake Liposuction Procedure

The awake liposuction procedure will begin by administering local anesthesia using a fine needle. Other than a slight pinch from the needle, the treatment is completely painless since the entire treatment area will be numbed. A few tiny incisions will be made in the skin and a cannula (hollow tube) will be used to carefully break up and suck out the excess fat cells. Since you will not have to come out of general anesthesia, you can return home immediately after surgery.

Awake Liposuction Results

After awake liposuction, patients should expect mild to moderate bruising, swelling, and tenderness in the treatment area(s). Discomfort can often be alleviated with over-the-counter pain medications and cold compresses. Strenuous activities should be avoided for a few weeks but light activities can be resumed after a few days. Results will start to be seen after 2-3 months as swelling reduces and your newly slimmed figure will be permanent as long as you maintain a healthy lifestyle.

FAQs About Awake Liposuction

What makes awake liposuction different?

For all tumescent liposuction techniques, the process begins with injecting a solution— which contains a strong anesthetic like lidocaine—into the targeted fat tissue. The numbing fluid suspends fat cells for faster, easier removal. rnrnThe awake liposuction technique is different in that it uses a high concentration of numbing medicine, allowing patients to remain conscious and comfortable throughout the procedure. In contrast, traditional liposuction techniques are usually performed under general anesthesia, meaning patients are put to sleep for the procedure and thus have a longer recovery period and typically need to manage more side effects.

What are the advantages of staying awake?

Aside from avoiding the side effects, downtime, and potential risks associated with general anesthesia, patients have the ability to change positions fluidly during the procedure. This dynamic movement allows me to sculpt the body in real-time, enhancing natural shadows and curves; achieving these results can be more challenging when you are under general anesthesia.

Am I a candidate for awake liposuction?

The ideal candidate for awake liposuction is someone with a lower body fat percentage seeking advanced body contouring. I can determine if this technique can safely and comfortably achieve the results you are looking for during a one-on-one consultation.

What can I expect during awake liposuction?

Before starting your procedure, I’ll outline the treatment area to guide me as I sculpt your new contours. Once you are completely numb, I’ll begin removing precise amounts of fat and, depending on the location, help you change positions to remove fat deposits to enhance your unique anatomy. At no point will you be required to view the procedure; we can use modesty drapes for privacy, or you can close your eyes. You’ll be able to talk to me and my wonderful surgical staff throughout the entire process.

Results of Awake Liposuction

It takes time to see the results of awake liposuction. It is normal for swelling to persist for several weeks or months. As any inflammation subsides, the results of your procedure will become more apparent. Once you have fully recovered, the fat will never come back, unless you gain weight. To maintain your results, it is best to follow a regular diet and exercise plan.

How much does Awake Liposuction cost?

The awake liposuction cost varies based on the number of areas treated. Awake liposuction is less costly than traditional liposuction since general anesthesia is not necessary. Awake liposuction takes place in an outpatient setting, so there are no hospital fees.

Are there any contraindications for Awake Liposuction?

Not all patients are a good fit for awake liposuction. At your consultation, Dr. Shienbaum will assess your overall health to determine if you are a candidate. Uncontrolled medical conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, sleep apnea, active use of blood thinners, etc., may be contraindications for awake liposuction.

How many areas can Awake Liposuction treat at once?

Because it is done in the office while you are awake, no more than one to two areas can be treated at a time.

When will I see the results?

Immediate results are expected, but final outcomes become apparent after 3-6 months as your body continues to heal and adjust.

Is the procedure painful?

Patients typically report mild pressure but minimal discomfort, thanks to local anesthesia.

How long do the results last?

Results can be long-lasting with a balanced lifestyle and stable weight maintenance.

What is the recovery like for this surgical procedure?

Right after your cosmetic surgery, you will be placed in compression garments. Instructions on how to take off compression garments will be given to you by our staff members. You can resume normal activities after a few days. Swelling, pain and soreness are expected after any plastic surgery procedure.
