Learn More About Lip Reduction
Almost everyone has heard about lip augmentation, but lip reduction can be equally beneficial for men and women with overly large lips. This procedure can also be used to correct overly plumped lips resulting from a previous lip augmentation procedure.
Lip reduction is a surgical procedure that reduces the size of the lips to create balance and better symmetry in the lower face. Reducing the size of the lips can have aesthetic and health benefits. People with overly large lips might have difficulty speaking, eating, or playing certain instruments like the flute or clarinet. Depending on your unique needs, both the upper and lower lips or just the upper lip can be reduced.
Anyone who is in good health and bothered by the overly large size of their lips can benefit from lip reduction surgery. Large lips are especially common among patients of African American and Asian backgrounds, but we have assisted patients of all ethnicities with lip reduction procedures. Whether you want to correct the results of a lip augmentation procedure or reduce the size of your naturally large lips, we can help.
If your overly large lips are the result of lip fillers, they can be dissolved with a hyaluronidase injection. Sometimes this is enough to achieve the desired results.
For patients who require their lips to be physically reduced, minimally invasive surgery can be performed under local anesthesia, meaning you are awake for the procedure. Incisions will be made inside the lips to prevent visible scarring and then small amounts of tissues and/or fat will be removed to shrink the lips. The remaining skin and tissues will be carefully repositioned and sculpted to ensure a natural-looking shape that matches your individual preferences.
After lip reduction surgery, there is minimal downtime and recovery period. Mild swelling and bruising are common but should improve significantly within one week. While most patients can return to work and light activities 1-2 days after their procedure, we recommend that you avoid strenuous activities for about three weeks. A liquid or soft diet can also be used to reduce discomfort and prevent straining along the incision lines. Sutures will be removed in our office about 5-7 days after your procedure.
We are pleased to offer innovative cosmetic procedures that consider each patient’s concerns and desired aesthetic. To learn more about lip reduction in the Tampa area, schedule a consultation with board-certified plastic surgeons Dr. Gargya and Dr. Shienbaum.
