Gynecomastia 101
The first step to treating a condition is to understand it. Gynecomastia is an enlargement of glandular tissue in the male breast. It is caused by an imbalance in hormone levels, where female hormones are increased. Certain medications and drug use may also trigger the onset of gynecomastia. While gynecomastia often occurs during puberty, it can affect males of all ages.
Treatment Options
The most effective treatment option for gynecomastia is male breast reduction surgery. The goal of this surgery is to create a normal breast contour and correct deformities of the breast or nipple areola. Both liposuction and excision techniques can be used to perform male breast reduction surgery, depending on the cause for enlarged breasts. Men with more fatty breast tissue may be able to benefit from liposuction alone, while men with enlarged glandular tissue will need to undergo excision. In some cases, a combination of techniques can be used.
