If you are unhappy with the appearance of your belly there are two core options for cosmetic correction, tummy tuck. These two procedures can help a patient correct the physical appearance of the abdominal area but using different methods. Understanding the difference between the two surgeries is very important when looking into different ways to correct your midsection.

What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a procedure used for the removal of unwanted excess fat. It requires the use of a cannula (a long thin tube with a sharp tip) that uses suction to remove stubborn pockets of fat that have been resistant a healthy diet and regular exercise. It is most often performed on areas that collect excess fat, such as the stomach, thighs, hips, and buttocks. The goal of the procedure is to augment the shape of the body for a more balanced look. This procedure is mainly recommended for people who are at a stable weight with good skin laxity.

What is a Tummy Tuck?

A full tummy tuck involves an incision around the lower abdomen and also requires an incision near the navel. Once the incision is made, the extra skin will be removed while the muscle is tightened. The loose skin removed is often skin that has been compromised by weight gain, genetic laxity or pregnancies and is no longer able to contract. An ideal candidate for this procedure is someone who has excess volume in the abdominal area due to excess skin and not fat.
