A breast augmentation, or an augmentation mammoplasty, increases the size of breasts using either Saline or Silicone breast implants. Fat grafting can also be used. During your consultation, Dr.Shienbaum will discuss the benefits of each so that you can make an informed decision about which implant is the best choice for you.
Saline breast implants are filled with sterile salt water, so if the implant were to leak, the saline would be absorbed naturally by the body. Saline implants are FDA-approved for those 18 years or older.
Silicone breast implants are filled with silicone gel, and feel closer to natural breast tissue. Silicone implants are FDA-approved for adults age 22 or older.
Fat grafting may be necessary in particular augmentations to provide a more natural result if breast tissue is thin.
During surgery, Dr. Shienbaum will make an incision in the bottom crease in the breast, or around the edge of the areola. He will base incision location on your individual needs and preferences, as well as the kind of implant you have selected.
After forming the incision, Dr. Shienbaum will then create a pocket where the implant will be placed. This pocket may be just underneath the breast tissue, or underneath the breast tissue and underlying pectoral muscle. Implant placement is also chosen based on an assortment of different factors.
In certain cases, Dr. Shienbaum may recommend including a breast lift along with your breast augmentation. This combination can lift sagging and drooping breasts, along with increasing breast size.
An immediate difference in your breasts should follow surgery. Final results may take several months to become completely apparent. To support your augmented breasts and minimize swelling during the early stages of your recovery, Dr. Shienbaum may ask you to wear a compression garment, elastic bandage, or a special bra. Most patients are able to return to their usual activity 5-7 days after the procedure.
About six months after your breast augmentation, your implants should be in their permanent position. They should look fuller and firmer, while still looking proportionate and natural. Many women also experience a boost in self-esteem following their breast augmentation.
