What is Capsular Contracture?

Like all types of surgery, breast augmentation comes with some possible complications. These issues may arise in certain individuals because everyone’s body deals with breast implants differently. For example, some people may develop thicker scar tissue, while others may only develop subtle scarring.

With breast augmentation, breast implants are used to increase the size of the breasts. When the implant is placed in the breast pocket, the body will automatically react to it by creating scar tissue around the implant. This is a normal part of the healing process. However, in some cases, the scar tissue, or capsule, becomes unusually hard and begins to contract around the implant. This can lead to aesthetic issues.

Capsular Contracture Grades

There are four grades of capsular contracture, from least serious to most serious.

Grade 1- Shows little to no symptoms. The scar tissue formed around the implant does not change the size, shape, or texture of the breasts. The breasts appear and feel natural.

Grade 2- Shows only minor cosmetic symptoms. The breasts may appear normal but feel firm to the touch.

Grade 3- Presents with obvious cosmetic symptoms. Breasts will be firm to the touch and appear overly round or hard looking.

Grade 4- Breasts will appear hard and misshapen. Patients will also experience breast soreness, tenderness, and pain.

If capsular contracture is going to occur, it will usually happen within two years of a patient’s implants being placed.

How to Treat Capsular Contracture

Capsular contracture can be treated with revision surgery. During this process, the damaged implants are removed, an antibiotic is given, and the breast implants can be replaced with fresh implants.
