The mommy makeover is one of the most sought-after forms of combined plastic surgery today, as it was developed to address specific concerns of women after they have given birth and started breastfeeding. The surgical method has entered the public consciousness because it has become the preferred treatment among A-list actors and actresses. A “mommy makeover” is a catchall word for various body contouring treatments done at once to address the effects of pregnancy and its aftermath on a woman’s body. The fact that each mommy makeover is tailored to the specific needs of its recipient may account in part for the procedure’s widespread appeal. However, most surgical procedures for these issues begin with breast and abdominal contouring procedures and progress from there.

Tummy tuck

The skin and muscles of the abdomen “stretch” during pregnancy to make room for the growing fetus. Even though some women can quickly recover, most will experience lasting effects such as sagging skin, stretch marks, and a loss of abdominal muscle strength.

Abdominoplasty, more commonly known as a “tummy tuck,” involves:
-The surgical removal of extra skin and fat from the abdominal region.
-The tightening and restoration of abdominal muscles.
-The navel or belly button returns to its “normal” position.

Breast Lift/Breast Augmentation

The breasts, like the abdomen, tend to grow larger during pregnancy. When a pregnancy ends, a woman’s breasts are no longer “perky.” If you’ve recently finished being pregnant or breastfeeding, you may have noticed that your breasts have lost volume and are starting to sag. Some women can experience stretching of the areolas, an increase in breast size, or a change in the shape of their breasts.

Breast lift surgery, or “breast enhancement with a breast lift,” can be performed as part of a mommy makeover to restore a more youthful contour to the breasts. The term “breast augmentation/mastopexy” is commonly used to describe this procedure. Excess skin is removed, the areola is repositioned during a breast lift, and an implant, either saline or silicone, may be added to enhance or restore fullness to the upper breasts. Women who experience persistently big breasts after childbirth may benefit from undergoing a breast reduction at the same time.

Liposuction

Some women find that they gain weight around their bellies or thighs after giving birth. Liposuction can eliminate this fat, and reshape problem areas like the midsection, buttocks, and legs. Liposuction can also remove unwanted fat from the neck, upper arms, knees, and other areas to help women achieve the body contours they desire. It’s not meant to replace dieting, so obese individuals are not good candidates.

Labiaplasty

Many women experience changes in the vaginal structure and response after childbirth, or as part of the aging process. Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure usually done to reduce the size the labia minora — skin folds that surround your urethra and vagina. The techniques used during the procedure will vary depending on the personal needs of the patient. Most women can return to everyday activities within a week or two, though it is recommended that patients refrain from sexual intercourse and strenuous exercise for a bit longer.
