While liposuction is a common plastic surgery procedure performed today, there are surprisingly still misconceptions surrounding it. We have put together a list of the most common liposuction misconceptions, as what the actual facts are.
Myth: Liposuction can help you lose weight
Fact: Most patients who undergo liposuction only lose about 2-5 pounds in total. The best candidates will be within 30% of a healthy weight range and have localized fat pockets they would like to eliminate. Liposuction is not a weight loss solution for those who are obese.
Myth: Liposuction can eliminate cellulite
Fact: Because cellulite is not simply an irregular pocket of fat, liposuction cannot treat it. Cellulite occurs when subcutaneous fat pushes connective tissue bands beneath the skin, causing bumps and dimples. Liposuction can only remove soft, fatty tissues, so cellulite is not treated.
Myth: Liposuction is dangerous
Fact: While every type of surgery carries some risks, liposuction techniques have become increasingly sophisticated over time. When liposuction is performed by a board certified plastic surgeon, it can be as safe and successful as any other surgical procedure.
Myth: Liposuction can tighten lax skin
Fact: Liposuction is meant to remove stubborn fat deposits; however, it cannot correct sagging areas of skin. In such cases, skin tightening procedures may be able to help.
