What is the best age to get a facelift ?

Generally speaking the earlier one starts caring about their facial changes the better the results. Waiting until the skin has aged wrinkled and thinned out does not allow for the most long lasting treatment outcomes . Younger individuals in their 40’s and 50’s are frequently starting with mini lifts or other minimally invasive skin tightening techniques. The average age for facial procedures in Dr Shienbaums practice has slowly decreased and is now about 55 y/o. Ultimately the timing of your facelift will be based on your personal appearance, genetic makeup, lifestyle , and dietary choices – not your chronological age.

What type of anesthesia is used for a facelift ?

Virtually all of Dr Shienbaums facelifts are performed with a combination of local anesthetic (Lidocaine) and IV sedation. This allows for your own spontaneous breathing and a rapid recovery without the need for an intubation. In Tampa plastic surgery, a supervising Anesthesiologist MD is always assigned to supervise while the anesthetic may be given by a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist ( CRNA ). Occasional patients with some form of airway obstruction or sleep apnea will benefit from the added security of general anesthesia with total control of the airway.

Will I experience numbness after my facelift procedure ?

The surgical elevation of skin flaps will invariably produce temporary numbing over the cheek and neck region. This is due to the tiny nerve fibers which are unavoidably lifted from the underlying musculature. The superficial sensory nerve endings will typically regenerate in several weeks time. Often a patchy irregular return of sensation is noted which may be accompanied by some increased tingling or mild burning. These are all signals that the nerves are returning to their previous areas.

How much bruising can I expect with my Facelift ?

Bruising following a facelift or any other surgery varies considerably and depends on multiple factors. It may range from simple skin staining with supple skin to frank bleeding with tense painful skin . The bruising will typically resolve in several weeks and may descend slowly below the neck due to gravity. The multiple range of colors from yellow , green , to purple are due to the changing breakdown products of the blood components . A hematoma or collection of blood is more significant and will usually require drainage or evacuation. Arnica and Bromelain are naturally derived supplements thought to decrease the swelling and bruising following surgery. There is no agreed upon dose nor significant scientific evidence as to their efficacy.

Is a MACS Facelift for me ?

A special facelift procedure sometimes referred to as a MACs lift is perfect for an active lifestyle. Offered in Riverview, Lakeland, and Brandon, this facelift utilizes an inconspicuous incision along the hairline and the natural creases both in front and around the earlobe. Often a small incision placed under the chin. The loose tissues and muscles are then tightened, excess fat is removed, and the skin of the face and neck is re-draped to achieve a more natural look youthful appearance.
