A breast reduction is very similar to a
mastopexy. The major difference is that with
a breast reduction, we not only lift the
breasts, we also remove a significant amount
of breast tissue. However, due to the
removal of large amounts of breast tissue, a
breast reduction is frequently performed at
the hospital or an outpatient facility. Dr.
Shienbaum prefers to perform a breast
reduction at the hospital so that you can
spend that first night in observation.
Occasionally your health insurance may pay
for the surgical costs of a breast
reduction. It is more difficult than it was
in years past to get approval for this
particular procedure, but it is still
possible.
You need to take off about two weeks after
having a breast reduction. Dr. Shienbaum
asks that you avoid any heavy lifting for at
least two weeks until the incisions have
time to completely heal. You will be
required to wear a special surgical bra
which affords you extra support.
